I've never followed a straight line.
And I wouldn't change that.
I grew up in New York City as the kid who didn't always feel like he fit. The nerd. The quiet one. The one trying to work out where he belonged while dealing with all the emotional and physical struggles that come with growing up.
Basketball became part of the answer.
Not because the game magically changed everything, but because it taught me discipline, resilience, accountability and what can happen when somebody sees something in you before you fully see it in yourself.
Eventually, that uncertain kid became a Division I athlete at Seton Hall University, competing at the highest level of college basketball.
That was one transformation. It wouldn't be the last.
The First Pivot
After basketball, my life moved in a completely different direction.
I spent years working with young people in New York and New Jersey who were dealing with circumstances far more complicated than anything happening on a basketball court.
Young people in crisis. Young people without direction. Young people who had often been written off long before they had a chance to work out who they could become.
That work taught me something I still believe today:
People don't always need somebody to give them the answer. Sometimes they need somebody who can help them see the path.
Mentorship mattered. Accountability mattered. Having someone beside you who could challenge you, support you and help you see beyond your present circumstances mattered.
Then Life Pivoted Again
I moved to Australia. New country. New environment. Different challenges.
But the work continued.
For almost another decade, I worked within the Out-of-Home Care sector supporting young people facing different circumstances but many of the same questions: Where am I going? What am I capable of? And what happens next?
Different people. Different struggles. Same need for direction.
Full Circle
Eventually, basketball found its way back into my life.
What started with coaching the game grew into something much bigger. I began developing players, building programs, leading staff, creating cultures and helping organisations navigate growth and change.
Today, I serve as the General Manager of a major basketball association in Sydney, responsible for helping shape its people, culture, strategy and future direction.
And somewhere along the way, I realised something.
Whether I was sitting with a young person trying to find direction, coaching an athlete chasing the next level, managing a team of staff, or working through a major organisational decision… the work was never really that different.
It was about people. Understanding where they are. Getting clear about where they want to go. And helping them work out how to get there.
Why DJordan Coaching?
Because I've lived the pivot. More than once.
I've been uncertain about what came next. I've changed careers. Changed countries. Moved from athlete to youth worker, from coach to executive, and from following a path to helping create one.
I've learned that progress rarely comes from having everything figured out.
It comes from gaining clarity. Building resilience. Taking responsibility. Creating a plan. And continuing to move when life changes the direction on you.
